Greetings to all LDA consultant members, wherever you may be, as according to the membership list, you are scattered far and wide across this great country of ours. There are consultant members from Yeppoon (Queensland) to Balnarring (Victoria) and from Perth in the West to Grafton in the East. From a tiny beginning with a handful of practitioners in Melbourne, the organisation has spread across the nation and continues to grow.
People have asked me: "Who are consultant members? What’s the difference from ordinary members ?" Since one of the main aims of the organisation is to assist those with learning difficulties, teachers who have specialised in this field are most suited to providing such practical help. Those with tertiary qualifications in Special Education and experience in that field, who ask to join LDA, are invited to join as consultant members and possibly register for the Referral Service. This will put them in touch with parents or teachers who are seeking additional, specialised one-to-one tuition for students with severe learning difficulties. Because consultant members are offering a service to the public, they are given the opportunity to join a group insurance scheme. They pay a higher subscription than other members, but pay less when attending the professional development activities which LDA arranges from time to time. Additionally, they may get together with other consultants at informal ‘Zone’ meetings, which most people seem to enjoy.
I look forward to accepting many more consultant members so that more students with learning difficulties can experience additional special help in their areas of need.
