Don 17/07/09	Hi, my 13 year old son has just revealed to me the reason he has difficulty processing verbal information as quickly as his classmates, & would like to know where I turn to for help.Sometimes when my son is listens to people speak, he visualises a keyboard typing in the letters as they are spoken....at times there is a mistake made during the typing & the keyboard goes through a correction process. My son says he is unable to divorce himself of the visual, even though he knows he is falling behind with catching the verbal communication. My son is normally around B's or A- but has had a sharp decline in the last 6 months. It is worth noting that my son is constantly the winner of mental math contests & yet is very slow when it comes to demonstrating 'how' he arrives at the answer....as a consequence he is marked down for not showing enough working...even though he has the correct answer? NB - He also shows some signs of Tourette Syndrome in the form of ! tics at a mild level. He plays basketball at a representative level & can process 'on court' situations as well as the other players I would appreciate any advise you may have in terms of where I should go next or where I can research Kind regards to all who service this forum
Margaret 27/07/09	Don, I would suggest the most appropriate person to help with diagnosis and/or intervention to help your son would be an educational psychologist. You may have difficulty accessing this service through school, due to your son's usual high achievement level, but his sharp decline in achievement means it may be worth asking. Be aware that waiting lists can be very long. The other option is to find a private educational psychologist - the school may be able to recommend someone, if you are able to pay for the service. As this is a forum, not a direct referral service, perhaps someone else may be able to help.
