LDA OnlineTutor Search

The  LDA Online Tutor Search is designed to allow users to search for specialist teachers with specific skills in teaching students with learning difficulties by location, year level, and areas of specialist expertise.

To find a Tutor in your area who has the specialist skills you are looking for, click the Online Tutor Search . From the search options firstly select the school level of the person for whom you are seeking a Tutor, and then the area(s) of difficulty in which tutoring is required. Next you need only enter your postcode and select your suburb from the dropdown box. Then carefully include the Captcha security code, and click on search.

The Tutor Search will then provide you with a list of Consultant Tutors who meet the requirements as specified. Select tutors by clicking on their name to see their individual Tutor Profiles. You can Go Back to the list to select other Tutors.

To choose a Tutor, click on Contact. The next screen asks for your name, contact details and enquiry, plus another Captcha security code. Then click on Send Contact Inquiry. Your request and contact details will be forwarded to LDA and to the tutor(s) of your choice. Consultant tutors will respond to your Tutor Search email messages as soon as they can, usually within three days. However, if a Consultant does not respond promptly to your request, please be aware that some consultants work only on weekdays and some may be away during school vacations. If your request is urgent, please try another LDA Consultant.

At the moment the tutors included in the Tutor Search file are all based in Victoria, and mainly in the Melbourne area.  However, we expect in time to expand the Tutor Search to include tutors in other states and regions.

All the tutors listed in the LDA Tutor Search program are specialist teachers who are registered as Consultant members of LDA, and who have relevant qualifications and experience in the areas of:

  1. Teaching children and/or adults with learning difficulties,
  2. Assessment of relevant skills and monitoring of progress,
  3. Individual instruction, strategies and support at different levels of literacy and numeracy,
  4. Organisational and study skills.

Instruction is usually provided at the Consultant’s premises. However some Consultants visit schools or homes on request.

FAQs

1. How much does the tuition cost?

Our Consultant teachers operate their own private practice and set their own fees for teaching sessions which generally range from about $60 to $100 per hour. Usually teaching sessions are weekly but vary in the length of the teaching session.

2. Is there any discount for pensioners or low income families?

No, but families are advised to contact Centrelink to check their eligibility for the non-means tested Carer Allowance.

3. Does my child require an assessment before she/he can be referred to an LDA teacher?

No, but any assessments that have been done will provide useful information for our Consultant teachers. Some additional assessment may be done by the Consultant teacher before the commencement of tuition. LDA Consultant teachers will also recommend referrals to other professionals for assessment when appropriate.

4. Will the teacher come to our home or my child’s school?

Most of our Consultants work from their own premises but some do travel to families or are available to visit schools during the day by arrangement with the school.

5. How do I know the Consultant will be suitable for my child?

To be accepted by LDA, Consultant teachers have to provide their qualifications, and regular evidence of Police Checks. To retain membership they also have to provide annual details of Professional Development in the field of learning difficulties. It is suggested that a meeting takes place between the child, parent and Consultant teacher before the teaching sessions commence.

6. Will the Consultant communicate with my child’s school?

Yes. LDA Consultants will ask your permission to communicate with the school and any other relevant professionals. However, if this is not wanted by the parents, it will not be done.

7. Are there LDA Consultants in regional Victoria?

We have Consultants teachers in Geelong, Ballarat and Wangaratta at this stage. We can sometimes arrange a referral for a Remote Access service using Skype. As the new Online Tutor Search program expands there might be some Consultants available in other states.

8. Do you provide scholarship preparation?

No, this is not part of our primary focus although some of our consultants do also work in this area.

9. How long will my child need to have tutoring?

This varies according to individual needs. Your LDA Consultant teacher will be better placed to answer this question after an assessment and the commencement of tuition. It must be noted that some children might need intermittent support throughout their education.

10. Will I have to pay if we miss a session?

Our Consultant teachers will provide you with printed information about fees, including their policy for absence and late notification of absence and methods of payment. Parents may request make up lessons at a mutually agreed time.

11. Do you have VCE teachers?

We have a few Consultant teachers who offer tuition in English up to Year 12 but very few VCE Maths teachers.
